Getting to Know Columbia
Columbia is the county seat of Maury County, set along the Duck River about 43 miles southwest of Nashville. It’s a city with a long history and a downtown that remains the center of community life.
Columbia is home to the James K. Polk Home, the ancestral home of the 11th president of the United States. It was built in 1816 by his father and is open to visitors. Each April, the city celebrates Mule Day, one of its best-known traditions. Riverwalk Park, just northeast of downtown, connects to a paved riverside path and provides access to the Duck River. Columbia State Community College, founded in 1966, is also based here.

Homes and Property in Columbia

Columbia offers a broad mix of property types: historic homes near downtown, established neighborhoods, newer subdivisions, and rural properties a short drive from town. That range makes it worth considering for buyers looking for an in-town home as well as those hoping for more land.
Practical Considerations
- Older homes deserve a closer look. Many of Columbia’s historic and established homes have character worth preserving, along with systems and improvements that should be evaluated carefully. This is where my construction background is especially useful.
- Properties near the Duck River may be affected by floodplain designations, so flood zone information is worth reviewing.
- Schools in Columbia are part of Maury County Public Schools. I recommend confirming school zoning for the specific address.
- Rural properties outside the city limits may rely on wells, septic systems or utility districts rather than city services.
How I Can Help
Columbia rewards buyers who take the time to understand a property, whether it’s a century-old home near downtown or acreage outside town. I’ll help you look past the listing, ask the right questions and decide whether a property truly fits your plans.
